Straight answers about sore joints and treatment

Start with the question that affects you today. These answers cover common soreness, home care, cost, and visits. An exam is still needed for advice about your own joint, but this can help you prepare.

Why is my joint stiff after sitting?

A resting joint may stiffen because its muscles and smooth inner lining haven't moved for a while. Gentle motion warms the area and spreads fluid inside the joint. That often eases the first steps. Mention stiffness that lasts through the morning or swelling in several joints.

How can I calm joint soreness at home?

Keep moving without forcing sharp pain, using short walks or easy motion with rest between efforts. Warmth can ease stiffness before movement, while a cold pack may settle later swelling. Check with a pharmacist or doctor before adding medicine.

When does a sore joint need quick medical care?

Seek prompt help for sudden heat, heavy swelling, or a sharp loss of joint motion. Fever makes that more urgent. After a fall, get quick care if your leg won't hold weight. New numbness or weakness isn't usual joint wear.

What is PRP?

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma: pale blood fluid holding extra pieces that help clots form. The office makes it by spinning a blood sample so those pieces gather together. Human studies show mixed relief. Research hasn't found that it reliably repairs cartilage, the slick cap where bones meet inside a joint.

Is regenerative medicine covered by insurance?

Regenerative medicine means care made from blood, marrow, fat, or donated tissue. Many of these joint procedures require you to pay the full charge. An exam, X-ray, physical therapy, brace, medicine, or surgery advice may use other benefits. Ask the office for each service name and billing code, then read both to your plan.

What will the clinician check during my visit?

Expect questions about when soreness started and which activities worsen it. The clinician checks how the joint moves, how strong it feels, and where swelling or tenderness sits. Bring your medicines and past records. Take written choices home to compare relief, risks, visits, and total cost.

  1. A cross-sectional study contacted 273 of 317 US centres offering direct-to-consumer stem-cell therapy, posing as a 57-year-old man with knee osteoarthritis. The mean advertised price of a unilateral same-day stem-cell knee injection was $5,156 (SD $2,446), and centres claimed a mean clinical efficacy of 82% (SD 9.6%) - a figure with no support in the published evidence. The gap between the quoted number and the trial data is the single most useful thing a patient can be told before a consultation.

  2. Medicare's National Coverage Determination covers autologous platelet-rich plasma ONLY for chronic non-healing diabetic, pressure or venous WOUNDS, and only under Coverage with Evidence Development inside an approved clinical research study. There is no Medicare coverage pathway for PRP as a treatment for osteoarthritis or any other joint indication, which is why these injections are quoted as cash prices.

  3. In January 2025 the Federal Trade Commission banned the co-founders of a stem cell institute and their companies from marketing stem cell treatments and ordered them to pay more than $5.1 million in refunds and civil penalties. Deceptive EFFICACY ADVERTISING, not merely unapproved manufacturing, is independently actionable - the FTC polices what a clinic promises as well as what it injects.

  4. FDA states plainly that no stem cell, exosome, stromal vascular fraction, umbilical cord blood, Wharton's jelly or amniotic-fluid product has been approved for the treatment of ANY orthopedic condition - it names osteoarthritis, tendonitis, disc disease, tennis elbow, back pain, hip pain, knee pain, neck pain and shoulder pain individually. The only FDA-approved stem cell products in the United States are cord-blood-derived blood-forming stem cells for disorders of the hematopoietic system, and there are currently no FDA-approved exosome products.

  5. A GRADE-rated systematic review and meta-analysis of 16 randomized trials (807 participants) found that MSC therapy for chronic knee OA pain PROBABLY RESULTS IN LITTLE TO NO DIFFERENCE in pain relief at 3-6 months (WMD -0.74 cm on a 10 cm VAS against a minimally important difference of 1.5 cm) or physical functioning (WMD 2.23 on the SF-36 100-point subscale against a 10-point MID), both moderate certainty; at 12 months pain was again probably little-to-no-different (WMD -0.73 cm). The measured effect is real but sits BELOW the threshold at which a patient would notice it.
